When I was in high school, I asked my mom to teach me how to sew. After a few 'lessons', I decided to make a jean quilt. I collected everyones old jeans, cut them up and quilted them together...it took me all summer. Lately I've been reminiscing about that project because somewhere between college and moving to California it got lost. So this week's upcycle idea is a tribute to that project. :D Thursday and Friday were so busy, that I did not have a chance to sit down and post anything. Thursday Grant and I went to see a house that was just put onto the market, it was amazing. So amazing that we decided to throw caution to the wind and make an offer on it. In order to make our offer legit we had to pull together a plethora of paperwork that evening....which gave me no time to blog. :D Friday was also busy, the Envision Art Deptartment had Parent Open House, so I had to get to work extra early to prep and ended up staying late. Afterwork my sis helped me cleaned the house, because we hosted my her boyfriend's surprise birthday party! Again, didn't have a chance to blog. Today Grant & I slept in, worked on a few things around the house and now I am finally getting my blog caught up. YAY! So here is this week's upcycle*idea.... fusing plastic! Fused plastic is a durable and unique material that can be sewn, cut, braided, etc. Artist, Brooke Helfen who takes it to a new level. Below are her photographs of the process. Under the upcycle*idea is a feature of the amazing work she creates with fused plastic. She has a great shop on etsy called So She Sews and a website @ www.soshesews.com, check it out! :D What happened to Thursday??!! The day flew by and I did not get a chance to make a post. Here is my upcycle* idea for this week. Coffee grounds!! They add shine and natural color to your hair...give it a try. :D {Photos from on this layout are not mine, they came from stock photography sites} On a separate note, I am working on creating more stylish designs, so you may notice a few changes on my site and in my posts. Upcycle* idea no. 11 is about finding ways to reuse clothing. By shopping at thrift stores, swap meets and garage sales you can find great deals on clothing, shoes, and accessories. It takes a little bit of creativity and an open mind, but it is a great way to save money and to get into the upcycling spirit! Lately my wardrobe has been coming more from second hand shops and less from department stores and boutiques. Here is the breakdown of an outfit I wore last weekend. :) Instead of breaking down the steps for this upcycle*idea, I wanted to show how three inspiring crafters are using shutters as creative home decor. If you visit each of their blogs you will find steps to each project. // Shutters as a bulletin board :: Craftynest // // Shutters as a magazine rack :: MyRePurposedLife // // Shutters as a succulent planter :: StudioGBlog // I have been on the look out for buttons and came across these unique homemade wooden ones online at Hand Knitted Things. They are beautiful and handmade from twigs. What a fun project to try! Busy with moxie shop and teaching (SCHOOL MEETINGS start today!), I pulled the pictures together for this one and look forward to giving it a go soon. I love this idea, a good friend (Rachel!) showed me a magazine clipping of candlestick banisters....and I had to try it! All the pictures are mine and the candle sticks are sitting on my kitchen table. I didn't write out directions because the pictures are pretty self explanatory, let me know if you have any questions! Enjoy. {NOTE: You can find banisters at salvage yards and for each banister you get TWO candle sticks (usually).} This is the first upcycle*idea that I did from start to finish and had my fiancée photograph along the way. So these are our photos and the corkboard is being used in our room! It's pretty self explanatory...I hope you enjoy it. :) | My Etsy
